Gilberto Freyre Brazil in the spotlight With the growing participation of Brazil on the international scene, along with strong economic performance and the country’s selection as host nation of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, the decision to pay tribute to the first author to analyze the constitution of Brazilian society from a positive perspective promises to make for heated debate in Paraty. Though not a fiction writer like the tribute authors of earlier Flips, Gilberto Freyre was certainly the most literary of Brazilian social thinkers. This year, more than an ephemerality or important publishing roll-out, what motivated the decision was the particular moment in which Brazil finds itself. For some time now, since the centenary of Gilberto Freyre’s birth in 2000, there has been a steady stream of important works on the author, and debate about his contribution continues at full steam. The Flip tribute is one more movement in the wider context of the recuperation and reevaluation of his legacy.
