A palavra conta (documentary) The Movement for a Literary Brazil will screen its documentary A Palavra Cont (Words Count), featuring stories about Brazil as a country of readers and showing images of Brazilians relating to books. The screening will mark the Movement’s first anniversary – it was at Flip 2009 that the Manifesto for a Literary Brazil was first read. |

Gilberto Freyre, o Cabral Moderno In 2000, filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos (director of Rio 40 Graus and Memórias do Cárcere among others), one of the founders of Cinema Novo, made a four-part TV series about the classic work, The Masters and the Slaves. The first episode deals with the life of its author, Gilberto Freyre, the subject of Flip’s homage. |

Frei Betto’s Literature To kick off “The Ideas Game”, conceived by Itaú Cultural, journalist Eliane Brum talks to author Frei Betto. Known for his staunch support of human rights, Frei Betto wrote, among other books, a memoir of the dictatorship’s abuses – Batismo de Sangue (Blood Baptism) – which was turned into a film. Cristovão Tezza’s Literature Literary critic, university lecturer and one of the greatest Brazilian writers of recent times, Tezza will be interviewed by another well-known writer, Luiz Ruffato. The discussion will cover his ten books, including the autobiographical O Filho Eterno (The Eternal Son), already in its tenth edition, and winner of the 2008 Jabuti prize for Best Novel.
