Event 6
The book: chapter 2 Robert Darnton John Makinson mediator Cristiane Costa No contemporary author has studied the past and future of books as thoroughly as historian Robert Darnton. Director of the Harvard University Library, he was actively involved in negotiations with Google about the digitisation of the library’s collections. He registered some of his thoughts on the project in essays collected in The Case for Books, recently published in Brazil. John Makinson, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Penguin Group, has been at the vanguard of the recent transformations suffered by the publishing industry around the world. The possible futures of the written word are the subject of their conversation in Paraty. |

Event 8
Postcolonial tea William Boyd Pauline Melville mediator Ángel Gurría-Quintana Both William Boyd and Pauline Melville have been associated to a genre of literature conventionally dubbed “postcolonial”. The tag is vague, and fails to convey with any precision what is unique about the work by its practitioners. It refers, generally, to authors who use fiction to examine the destiny of countries where colonial rule has left still-visible marks. This is exactly what Boyd and Melville do. Their common approach is a springboard for their conversation in Paraty. |

Event 9
New promises, old worlds A. B. Yehoshua Azar Nafisi mediator Moacyr Scliar A.B. Yehoshua is one of the great names of Israeli prose fiction, alongside Amos Oz and David Grossman. Like them, he is a humane and articulate voice in the Middle East peace process. Azar Nafisi, an outstanding name in Iranian letters, has used her work to make scathing criticisms of Iran’s theocratic regime. Two authors from troubled countries will attest to the power of literature as a starting point for dialogue between cultures. |
7:30 pm
Event 10
In the name of the son Salman Rushdie mediator Silio Boccanera Salman Rushdie will launch his latest work, Luka and the Fire of Life, during Flip. But the conversation will not be restricted to the themes of the book, a sequel to his celebrated children’s novel, Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1998). Rushdie’s second Flip appearance will allow him to discuss his role as the embodiment of multicultural literature, and to air his views on contemporary current affairs. |
