Event 11
Walking by faith Terry Eagleton mediator Silio Boccanera Terry Eagleton is one of today’s most influential literary critics. He is also the author of a book in which he takes issue with Richard Dawkins, a guest at Flip 2009. Eagleton argues that the atheism advocated by scientists like Dawkins is based on a simplistic and erroneous view of religion. The book, which caused great controversy upon publication, will be the subject of his talk in Paraty. 12am Event 12 Albany, New York and other villages Colum McCann William Kennedy mediator Ángel Gurría-Quintana Irish writer Colum McCann won the National Book Award for his latest novel, Let the Great World Spin, set in New York near the day, in 1974, when acrobat Philip Petit walked on a tightrope between the World Trade Center’s twin towers. In the seven books of his “Albany cycle”, author William Kennedy turns the town of his birth into a microcosm for American society. Both authors have turned a city into a central character, eliciting the question that will guide their conversation in Paraty: is talking about your own village the best route to being universal? |

Event 14
The origin of the universe Robert Crumb Gilbert Shelton mediator Sergio Dávila Though it has featured some of the greatest names in world literature, Flip has rarely had the opportunity of welcoming a living legend to Paraty. This event is one of those rare opportunities. In a session that is likely to enter the annals of Brazilian culture, Robert Crumb –the most influential comic book artist of all times and a poster-boy for American counter-culture— will review his career and discuss his latest work, a graphic version of the book of Genesis. The equally charismatic Gilbert Shelton will complete the perfect duo to discuss the history of contemporary comic books and the American underground scene. |
