Rarely have Brazilian comic strips been so prolific. Following in the footsteps of pioneers such as Larte and Angeli, these young artists have engaged with literature and taken Brazilian comic strips to new heights of sophistication. Some have been awarded the most prestigious prizes in the field, both in Brazil and abroad. Outra vida, the most recent novel by Rio de Janeiro native Rodrigo Lacerda, delves deep into a couple’s crisis. For this event in Paraty, Lacerda will appear in conversation with one of the Brazilian artists who have most successfully explored the end of love: playwright and filmmaker Domingos de Oliveira, director of Todas as mulheres do mundo and Separações. In Sérgio Rodrigues’ Elza, a garota, the true story of a young woman killed by the Communist Party becomes the starting point for a carefully crafted experiment in fiction. Meanwhile, in Os irmãos Karamabloch, Arnaldo Bloch uses the history of his own family, founders of a media empire, to write a book that mixes elements of biography, memoir and novel. In Beijing Coma, Ma Jian probed a fresh wound in modern Chinese history: the Tian’anmen Square Massacre twenty years ago. Journalist Xinran has uncovered older scars: her latest book, China Witness, collects accounts by survivors of Mao Tse-Tung’s Cultural Revolution, which killed close to a million people between 1966 and 1976. The fact that this year marks the two hundredth anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, or the 150th anniversary of the publication of his most important book, On the Origin of Species, is only a coincidence. But it helps to emphasise the presence, in Paraty, of one of Darwin’s most influential followers, author of The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion.
